Winter Hair Woes

Hair tends to lose moisture during winter, so even though the scalp may be oily, the strands become dry and lusterless, resulting in hair loss. As a result of dryness and slowdown in production of oil, the scalp tends to flake more than usual. Such flaky scalp can aggravate hair conditions like dandruff and cause further hair loss. Moreover, dry hair is more prone to breakage. So it is important to protect your hair from loss of moisture to prevent all sorts of hair problem. We share some hair care tips to combat the wrath of these nippy months. But before you indulge in these remedies, take a look at your diet.

Include food rich in iron such as dates, apples, spinach, fig they nourish and strengthen hair. Eat walnuts and almonds to prevent flaking. Vitamins are also known to be good for your hair, so includes more fruits and vegetables in your diet.

1) Take a little warm olive oil in the palm of your hand and gently massage it into your hair using your finger tips. The frequency depends on the condition of your scalp. If you have oily hair then once a week is fine, if its dry then twice a week and daily or every alternate day if you have a flaky scalp.

2) Curd applied weekly, especially on dry hair acts as a cleanser and is a natural conditioner. It helps in reducing flaky scalp condition.

3) Avoid applying vinegar, beer and alcohol based hair gels and sprays, as these tend to make the scalp flaky and hasten the greying process. Instead use aloe vera gel.

4) Avoid frequent use of henna during winter to prevent dryness and hair loss. Instead apply honey diluted in water, use it as a final rinse after shampooing. It will add the much needed shine to dry brittle, lack lustre hair.
