Too Sunny for Comfort
Life is such that we can not avoid being exposed to the sun altogether. Even if we confine ourselves to being indoors for most of the time, exposure to sunlight is inevitable.
While limited amounts of sunlight are good for the skin – it is very high in Vitamin D – prolonged exposure could lead to problems. The skin darkens quickly. It is also robbed of moisture and starts to age faster. On fairer skin, it causes the formation of freckles. More seriously, prolonged exposure to direct harsh sunlight could also lead to skin cancer. So the next time you rush out for your tan, think well about what you could be getting into.
The best prevention from sunlight is the use of sunblock. Application of sunblock is a must for anyone who steps outdoors during the day. SPF or the Sun Protection Factor in all sunblocks helps protect the skin from all harmful effects of sunlight. It also prevents sunburn.
The kind of sunblock you choose could depend on the place you are in. the degree of sunlight prevalent in your area should help you determine what sunblock suits you best. Thos who live in areas where sunlight is harsh should choose sunblocks with higher SPF’s. They could go up to 45-50. Those who are looking for mere protection against mild sunlight can opt for a lower SPF (15-20).
Apply sunblock over all areas of the body that will be exposed when you step out. (hands, face and please do not forget about the feet if you are wearing open slippers or sandals). Leave it on for about 20 to 30 minutes before you actually go out. This time allows the skin to absorb the sunblock.
There are now various forms of sunblock available for different skin types. Creams can be used for normal or dry skin, and gels for oils skin. Choose your type well. If you have any skin condition, allow your dermatologist to recommend a suitable sunblock for use.
Ensure good use of sunblock to preserve your skin. Not only its look, but also its health could be at stake.
