The Structure of Hair
We share some information about hair and its structure. A little elementary knowledge about hair will help us understand the hair better. We will learn how to deal with our tresses. It will also throw light on the damaging effects of improper hair care or treatment.
Hair is made of dead protein, which is commonly known as Keratin. The part of the hair which is above the scalp is called the hair shaft and the one that is before the scalp is the hair follicle. At the base of the follicle is a small concentration of living cells called the papilla, which eventually forms hair. When the papilla is damaged, you will not have new hair growth.
Next to the hair follicle is the sebaceous gland, yes it is the same gland that is found on the skin. This gland produces natural oil that lubricates the hair and scalp. This natural oil is also known as sebum and may be produced in excess, giving you oily and limp hair. When produced in right quantity, it will add shine to the hair. Each hair strand is made up of three concentric layers.
The outer layer has tiny, transparent scales which overlap each other and contribute to the shine. It is when this layer is removed, the hair loses its natural lustre and looks dull and rough. The middle layer is responsible for adding colour to your hair. This layer contains pigments that give colour to you hair.
There is another innermost layer, which may not be present if the hair is fine. Individual hair goes through three phases, it is known as the hair life cycle. The three phases are, growth phase, transition phase and resting phase. At the end of the resting phase, the hair is shed and is replaced by a new hair.
Hence hair fall is natural and normal unless you loose hair excessively. Too much of hair loss can cause thinning and balding. Hair is porous in nature and absorbs oil or any other chemicals that you apply. So, it is important what you use on your hair. Treat it with care and you will see the results.
