The Miracle of Henna
Much before the invention of chemical colorants as dyes, plant products were used to colour hair, hands and nails. Among these natural products, henna has survived the centuries and still remains the most sought after herb in hair care.
There are some benefits of henna for hair:
It has certainly seen a lot of changes though, earlier in ancient times, henna leaves were plucked from the plant and then grinded for making a thick paste. These days, however, henna is available in ready to use packs. It is available in the form of hair mask, dry fine powder and also in the form of cones for application on the hands.
It is considered as an auspicious thing in Indian marriages, specially hindu marriages. However, you will be surprised to know that the use of henna has been traced back to ancient Egypt. It was also used in Middle East and India. Henna is known to have a cooling effect, the paste of henna leaves was used to cure sunstroke or bring down fever. This herb is loaded with several cosmetic properties too and is best suited for hair care.
Women often complaint that henna application causes dryness or frizziness of the hair. But we do not agree with this, if applied correctly, it can have nourishing and soothing effect on your tresses. Henna has the ability of coating the hair shaft, this is proved by the colour it leaves on your hair. This kind of coating thickens the hair and conditions the hair. It also adds shine to hair, adds volume and body and makes the hair supple.
In fact, it does not disturb the acid/alkaline balance of the scalp and has cleansing properties too. To make the perfect henna paste at home for application on the hair and scalp, you must soak it in yogurt or curd. This is a pre-requisite i you don’t want to make your hair dry and rough. You can also add some lime juice, amla juice and egg to increase its effectiveness.
This combination of herbs and conditioner (curd) is a treat for your hair. It will prevent hair fall, restore shine and nourish your hair. Also, note that it is important to cover your head with a shower cap after henna application. Do not let the paste dry, else it will make your hair rough.
