Select the Right Tools for the Job
There are several tools that you need to straighten your hair with a flat iron. The first tool is a quality flat iron. The best flat irons will have ceramic plates. Some of the top flat irons on the market are the Sedu Ionic Ceramic Professional Straightening, the ERGO Hair Straightening Iron, and the T3 Hair Straightening Iron. These irons are high end tools and they each cost around $150.
Use good quality hair loss shampoos, conditioners and styling products that are made to protect hair from heat. ALWAYS apply some type of thermal protection to your hair before using a flat iron! These come in an array of forms: straightening balms, serums, sprays. Our favorite Straight line is by the masters of straight hair: CHI by Farouk. CHI’s thermal infra line contains a balance of moisture for softness and proteins for strength. Made especially for heat styling.
Take a one or two-inch section of hair and clamp the iron down as close to the scalp as possible. Slowly pull iron down the length of hair. (Be sure to read directions to see what heat setting you should have iron on and how long to keep iron on hair).
After you shampoo your hair and while it‘s still wet, apply the anti–frizz lotion. Don‘t skip this step, it‘s very important.
Blow–dry your hair until it is thoroughly dry. All of the moisture has to be removed.
Rub a serum gloss between your hands and palm over hair for extra shine and to keep hair in place. To keep frizzies along the hairline at bay, spritz hairspray on an old toothbrush and ‘brush’ them down.
Brazilian Hair straightening. This method is the hottest new hair styling treatment in salons. It even made it into a story in the New York Times. Your stylist applies a keratin protein formula and uses a flat iron to get your hair straight. Theoretically, the protein will crystalize on your hair and keep it in a straightened state. You are then encouraged not to wash your hair as frequently because you’ll reverse the effect.
Although the width of a hair straightener is important, that’s not what makes the straightening of any hair type possible. For a flat iron to make hair straightening a breeze, it should allow you to adjust the temperature or heat settings of the plates. If a flat iron doesn’t get hot enough, you may have trouble straightening your hair.
