Saw Palmetto Hair Loss - Can it Stop Baldness
March 14, 2008
There are a number of herbal supplements out there that claim to work as a hair loss treatment. Whereas there is no question that marketing is over-reaching at best in order to sell a product, the real question for any hair loss sufferer is: will this product help combat hair loss or is there any chance that it will regrow hair?
Hair loss or baldness is a state of lacking hair, especially in the scalp area. Androgenic alopecia, also known as male-pattern baldness, is the most common type of hair loss. Androgenic alopecia also affects females however and it is why the condition is also referred to as female patterned baldness.
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens or Sabal serrulata) is a dwarf palm plant native to North America. It primarily grows along the Atlantic coast in Georgia and Florida. The active ingredients are believed to be found in the plant’s brown-black berries.
Saw Palmetto is traditional topical herbal medicine used to help improve skin and scalp conditions, maintain healthy skin and hair, reverse hair loss. It was used by American Indians as hair, scalp and skin care. It is said to revitalize mature skin, to bring olive shine to the skin, to help revive hair follicles, improve hair strength, body and shine, make scalp less sensitive to stress and irritation
To prevent and treat hair loss, the level of DHT in the body must be decreased. This can be accomplished in different ways. There are prescription drugs designed to inhibit DHT (such as finasteride also known as Propecia.), which block conversion of free testosterone into dihydrotestosterone..
Is it really true that saw palmetto grows hair and used in hair loss remedies? Unfortunately, there are not quite enough studies to sufficiently and scientifically prove the relationship of saw palmetto and hair growth. However, people around the world have seen this desired effect for themselves and the theory behind the effectivity of this herb is reasonable. Besides, it would not become as popular if there is only little truth in it, right?
