Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition, there are 5 types of psoriasis each with different symptoms. The skin often itches due to this condition and it may even crack or bleed, it can get painful if the lesions are severe. The cause of psoriasis is not clear, moreover it is not even infectious so the chances of it spreading through contact are completely eliminated.
Research states that psoriasis is an immune related condition, when the body gives incorrect signals to our body the body over reacts and produces more skin cells. Under normal condition the skin cells mature every 28 to 30 days but with psoriasis the skin cells mature faster i.e. every 3 to 6 days. The mature cells should be shed by the skin but when psoriasis develops the skin doesn’t shed the cells instead they pile up on the surface and cause lesions.
There is no permanent cure for psoriasis since it is a chronic condition which can flare up anytime throughout the life. Though treatment is available for this condition but it is best to control the signs and symptoms.
There are some triggers which can be avoided to keep psoriasis at bay if you learn the triggers you will be able to deal with it in a better way. Research shows there are known triggers for psoriasis — certain infections, some medications, skin injury, stress, and winter weather can flare up the condition. Also Smoking and alcohol consumption may trigger psoriasis.
While it is not always possible to avoid every trigger, knowing what triggers psoriasis can help you make informed decisions. There are 3 types of treatments available for psoriasis;
1) Topical treatment which means external application of the medicine in the form of cream or lotion. This is recommended in mild condition of psoriasis.
2) Photo-therapy, wherein light, usually ultraviolet rays are applied to the skin.
3) Oral or injected medication.
