How to Treat Dry Hair

Dry hair is often caused by too much time in the sun, chlorine, salt water, over-shampooing, permanents, heat styling, or neglect. Protection from the elements is the next step in treating dry hair. Dry hair is often caused by too much time in the sun, chlorine, salt water, over-shampooing, permanents, heat styling, or neglect. Healthy, silky hair is something we all want, but in our fast paced, fast food world, dry hair is what many of us have.

The first step to combating dry hair is proper grooming. A good hair cut can remove split or damaged ends, and put a new bounce in an otherwise drab look. Shampoo your hair regularly, as needed, but keep in mind that exceedingly dry hair may need to be shampooed less, or simply shampoo the roots.

Choose an acidic shampoo with a pH in the range of 4.5 to 6.5. You want to avoid shampoos that are alkaline (with a pH above 6.5) since these can promote dryness. The unfortunate fact is shampoos often contain harsh detergents which can completely rob your hair of its natural oils. Many of the so called “additives” such as natural botanicals that sound like they would help dry hair actually have the opposite effect. The best approach is to choose the shampoo with the mildest detergent you can find with added humectants like panthenol which can help to hold water onto the hair shaft to reduce dryness.

Do a deep-conditioning treatment

If your hair is very dry you should do a series of conditioner treatment 2/ 3 times for about two weeks to make the hair stronger and to bring the hair back to a more healthy state. A deep-conditioning treatment may include ??? deep conditioners, hot oil treatments, nourishing and hydrating hair masks. A hair treatment with oils will penetrate deep into the hair and scalp and will nourish your hair.
