How to Shampoo your Hair
April 22, 2008
Shiny hair is a sign of health because the layers of the cuticle lie flat and reflect light. When the scales of the cuticle lie flat they overlap tightly, so the inner layers are well protected from heat, sun, chlorine, and all the other hazards that can come from living in our environment. When hair is damaged, though, the scales may separate and hair can become dry. Because the scales on dry hair don’t protect the inner two layers as well, hair can break and look dull.
Shampooing is the make or break facto of hair health, which probably explains why it’s surrounded by myths and controversy.
First, thoroughly saturate scalp and hair using warm water (neither very hot nor very cold). Apply a small amount of shampoo (about the size of a quarter) to palm and rub hands together to evenly distribute.
How to Shampoo hair - To begin the actual process, brush hair thoroughly before wetting. This prevents tangling. Saturate hair and scalp with warm water (not hot water, because it could damage your hair and irritate your scalp). Apply a quarter sized amount of shampoo to palms and rub together. The best method of shampooing is to start with the scalp and roots and gently massage down to the ends of hair. Gently run fingers through hair to be sure that the shampoo is evenly distributed, especially if you have thick hair. Rinse the shampoo out by allowing the water to run from scalp to ends evenly. Do not bunch or squeeze hair, it could be damaging since hair is very fragile when it is wet.
As you rinse your hair, you should feel lighter and cleanlier. If not, then shampoo and rinse again. Keep in mind that the amount of lather does not determine if the shampoo is working. Actually, the less lather the better, because the molecules of the shampoo are grasping more dirt and oils. Once the hair is rinsed thoroughly, you are ready to condition.
Depending on the length of hair, the amount of shampoo is lathered onto wet hair. A dime size dollop of shampoo is sufficient for short hair; medium hair length may need a nickel size amount while long hair will naturally cry for more. Salon shampoos usually have a higher concentration and discretion is called for in using lesser amounts than usual for these.
A 3-minute hair loss shampoo massage in slow, circular motions, using fingertips (not nails) onto the scalp readies the hair for rinsing. This can be followed up with a conditioner suitable for the hair type, which may be rinsed out or left in, depending on the individual’s status of hair health.
