Highlighting Do’s and Dont’s

Highlighting is the most sought after thing these days. It has become very common these days and everyone seems to be highlighting their hair. Highlighting services are offered not only by salons but also by local beauty parlours. Though I don’t completely trust the quality of these local, so called beauty parlours. Whether you higjlight your hair from a local parlour or at the hands of a professional, there are certain Do’s and Dont’s which should be kept in mind.

Remember that you are treating your hair chemically so ensure that the chemicals are not too harsh. Also note that highlighting dark hair is difficult as compared to lighter hair and at times the hair is bleached to get a lighter shade, this procedure makes the hair very dry and coarse hence after care is very important.

There are shampoos available specially for highlighted hair, do not buy a shampoo with a conditioner, use a separate conditioner and if possible also use a leave-in conditioner. If care is not taken after highlighting you will start losing hair or you might experience breakage due to dryness.

Do’s -

Wash your hair thoroughly so that there is no residue of shampoo/conditioner or any other hair product like oil, gel or spray.

Take extra care after highlighting, use products meant for coloured hair.

Use a colour which compliments your skin and blends with the skin tone.

Keep a gap of atleast 3 mths between 2 highlighting sessions.

Dont’s -

Do not use Henna atleast for 3 months prior to highlighting.

Do not go for frequent touch ups.

Do not pre- bleach your hair before highlighting.

Do not wear blonde colour if you have dark skin.

Do not opt for global colouring unless very sure, go for streaking instead. Global colouring is out of fashion these days also when you streak your hair you are not treating your entire hair chemically, it is a section of hair that is highlighted.
