Baldness (alopecia), or severe hair loss, is much more common in men than in women. Hair loss can result from genetic factors, aging, local skin conditions, and diseases that affect the body generally (systemic diseases). Some medications, such as those used to treat cancer, also cause hair loss. Perhaps a poor diet with lots of junk food over a period of years and decades is involved in hair loss but scientists still don’t have a good understanding regarding the relationship of food and hair loss.

Hair is made of the protein kerotin, the same substance found in nails and skin. Each hair rises out of a bulb-like follicle and goes through a cycle of growth for up to five years. It then stops growing and goes into a period of rest, after which it falls out and a new hair starts to grow.

Major causes of hair loss include circulation, stress, hormonal changes and nutrition. Of course the toughest factor to overcome is genetics.

Hair loss or baldness is a common problem these days. There are many herbs which are useful in hair loss treatment. Herbs such as aloe, nettles, stinging nettle, birch leaves are excellent blood and skin cleaners and stimulate hair growth. Horsetail is a good source of silica and helps keep hair strong and shiny. Herbs such as arnica, marigold, rosemary, or southernwood are also useful for hair loss.

Herbs for Hair loss

Licorice extract may help prevent hair loss.

Used as a tea, parsley strengthens the kidneys. A tea made from raspberry and blackberry leaves is also good for they kidney.

Horsetail is a good source of silica. Silica helps to keep hair strong and looking shiny and sleek. To shampoo hair, steep 2 tbsp. horsetail in 4 oz. hot water and add to a baby shampoo.

Chinese herbs like Polygonum, Lycium fruit, Chinese foxglove root, Chinese yam, Cornus are also considered as effective way to stop hair loss.

Ginkgo Biloba is one of the popular hair loss remedies that is thought to help with many problems, among them improving the circulation of blood to the brain and skin. The majority of herbalists who prescribe this for loss of hair do so believing that the increase of blood to the brain and skin delivers more nutrients to the hair follicles and so promotes hair re-growth.

Used in Asia for thousands of years, Ginseng’s well known benefits include promoting vascular circulation and regulating cellular metabolism. When used in shampoo or hair tonic, Ginseng helps to nourish and strengthen hair.
