Hair Problems in Infants

Hair problems are not only related to adults but they also occur in infants. New born babies usually face hair loss for at least 1 year. The hair fall pattern is very different among infants and there are phases of hair loss. Though hair loss is common among infants and occurs in various stages, but at times it can be due to severe nutrition deficiency. If the child has iron/zinc deficiency or protein deficiency then there can be hair loss.

Other causes include hereditary issues or some hormone diseases, but most of the time the hair loss is normal if the baby is healthy and fit. The chances of other hair fall reasons are high when the child is weak and malnourished. The normal hair fall pattern among infants is quite varied, with some baby’s losing their first growth of hair even before the second one starts growing.

This makes us feel that the child is balding, in some infants the second growth begins before the first one starts falling hence the hair loss is not noticeable. Some babies may be born bald while some would have thick crop of hair.

Babies also loose hair on the back of their heads, this is one of the most common condition among infants. This kind of hair loss occurs due to rubbing on their heads when they lie on their backs. This condition will cure on its own and the bald patches will disappear once your baby learns to sit and crawl.

Until your baby learns to sit, you can hold up the infant for 1 to 2 hours in a day, this will help in preventing hair loss to a certain extent. Though hair loss is common in infants but a regular check up and consultation with a pediatrician is a must to ensure your babies overall health.
