Hair Loss in Children

Though hair loss is not a common problem amongst children but some of them go through this nightmare and it can affect the child badly. Hair is an integral part of our personality and losing hair is like losing a part of our identity.

Though losing 50 to 100 strands of hair everyday is normal for adults but it is not so in case of children. If your child faces hair fall, take it seriously and act on it quickly before the problem gets worse. Visit a dermatologist to identify the accurate cause of hair loss. The probable cause of hair loss among children is Alopecia.

1) Telogen Effluvium - This is caused either due to high fever or a sudden trauma or shock. In some cases it may be a temporary phase but if the hair follicle’s ability to regenerate hair gets affected then the hair loss can be permanent.

2) Trichotillomania – This is a psychological problem when the child pulls his/ her own hair and causes bald patches. It is important to cure the psychological disorder instead of focusing on hair loss treatment.

3) Tinea Capitis – This is a fungal disease like ring worm and can be cured with proper medication. It is highly contagious so care should be taken by other family members.

4) Traction Alopecia – While playing children often indulge in activities that damage hair, this can cause hair loss. It is good to monitor the activities of your child and educate them about hair care.

5) Alopecia areata - This is the most common reason amongst others for hair fall in children. It is caused by the body’s resistant system reacting at the site of hair growth. Usually treatment is not required in this condition since it will get cured on its own but medicines are available.
