Hair loss During Pregnancy
April 16, 2008
Hair loss that is connected to pregnancy usually occurs after delivery. During pregnancy, an increased number of hairs go into the resting phase, which is part of the normal hair loss cycle. This condition is not serious enough to cause bald spots or permanent hair loss, and should begin to diminish within 3-4 months after delivery. If you feel that you are experiencing unusual hair loss while you are pregnant, this may be due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency.
Hair loss after pregnancy is very natural and normal and you have to endure the stage. You will not lose all your hair and at best you will lose only those new hair growth during your pregnancy meaning that your hair condition will be back to your pre-pregnancy stage after a period of three months.
Many women actually experience hair growth during pregnancy, their hair appearing shiny and lustrous, but then experience hair loss after the pregnancy. This is perfectly natural and most often the changes are only temporary. When the hormone levels begin to re-adjust after the birth, the excess hair grown during the pregnancy falls out.
Some women recover quickly from the hair loss, and some find that it takes longer to re-grow the hair lost in the months following delivery. It is, however, very uncomfortable, during a very sensitive period for new mothers. Hormones are raging, and many women are experiencing post-natal depression and lowered self-esteem.
Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables, which contain flavonoids and antioxidants that may provide protection for the hair follicles and encourage hair growth
To keep your hair and scalp in good condition, treat yourself to a soothing aromatherapy scalp massage once every few weeks. Simply add several drops of essential oils to a half-cup of warm vegetable oil. Essential oils considered safe to use during pregnancy include lavender, neroli, patchouli, sandalwood and ylang ylang. Massage into your scalp and ends, then wrap your hair in a warm towel and relax for as long as you like.
To improve hair growth after pregnancy a woman should simply use targeted products that will improve the hair from outside and inside, such as, shampoos, conditioners, masks as well as a nutritious, balanced diet with additional supplements of vitamins and minerals. There is no hair loss treatment to accelerate or avoid hair loss after pregnancy however, it is possible that some women may not offer as significant hair loss as others.
