Hair Loss Cycle

Hair is made up of Keratin, the root of the hair or the hair bulb is embedded inside the skin and the shaft is a part which is above the skin and visible. The root comprises of hair follicles and papilla which decide the growth of hair, when the hair follicles shrink new hair growth is hampered.

Also healthy papilla promotes hair growth, when blood supply to the papilla is sufficient hair will grow at a good rate which is approximately half an inch per month. The quality of your hair is determined by 3 factors i.e, the porosity of hair, elasticity and texture.

While texture is genetically determined in most of us porosity which means the ability of hair to absorb moisture depends a great deal on nutrition. Also the elasticity of your hair which gives the hair its luster is determined by a healthy diet and care. The overall health of your hair is based on the kind of food you eat and the hygiene levels you maintain to keep your hair and scalp clean. Also protecting hair from external pollutants is very important.

Hair growth generally becomes sluggish during monsoon. This is because our metabolism i.e. our ability to digest food gets affected during this season. The tendency to lose hair during monsoon and winter is high, whereas during summer hair grows faster. There are 3 cycles/ stages in hair growth, ” Anagen”, “Catagen” and “Telogen” stage.

Your hair goes through all the 3 stages and then falls out if it falls out within these 3 cycles then the hair fall is considered to be abnormal. The Anagen phase lasts for about 1000 days and the hair grows in this stage, later in Catagen stage the hair stops growing and this phase lasts for 10 days. Finally in the Telogen stage, the hair rests and then falls out. This stage is also known as resting stage and lasts for about 100 days.
