Hair Loss And Scalp Diseases
Our hair and scalp has to go through many severe conditions day in and out, like pollution, chemicals, sun exposure and so on. To add to this are hereditary factors which add turmoil to the already troubled hair. Unhealthy hair and scalp can lead to various scalp conditions and subsequently hair fall. The two most common scalp diseases are psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.
Psoriasis of scalp - This condition causes redness, itching, dry powdery flakes or thick scales of the scalp. Scalp psoriasis is a chronic condition which may not be cured completely but it can be treated. The cause of this disease is not determined, however, it is suspected to be hereditary in nature.
Like all other diseases psoriasis is also aggravated by stress, so try to relax your mind with yoga and meditation. Psoriasis has a tendency to flare up and sun exposure is known to worsen this condition. Always try to protect your hair and scalp from the harsh rays of sun, keep a scarf or cap handy. Psoriasis cannot be cured with drugs, only topical treatment can be used for this condition.
Seborrheic dermatitis - This condition is commonly known as dandruff, and its symptoms are known to everyone. It causes oily scales, itching, redness and greasy flakes in the scalp. This may be caused to hormonal changes or by fungal infection of the scalp skin. This disease is slightly different from psoriasis and you can differentiate it by checking the flakes.
The flakes are very dry and powdery when infected with psoriasis whereas the flakes in case of seborrheic dermatitis are oily in appearance. Both the scalp diseases are non-contagious. If you suffer from any of the above condition, it is advisable to avoid scratching and picking these scales. Also stay away from hair dyes and chemical treatments like rebonding, perming etc.
