Hair Dye

Hair dye can be a boon or bane, it helps in covering the grey strands and makes one appear younger but it can also cause allergic reactions and severe swelling of the head and face. It is therefore advisable to conduct a patch test before going ahead with the procedure. It is best to get your hair dyed at the hands of a professional hair dresser, however, if you choose to dye your hair at home then read and follow the instructions carefully. Hair dying can be a pain in the neck since it requires frequent touch ups and maintenance. But the results are amazing (if it suits your skin/hair), it can take away years from your face and instantly lift up your looks.

Hair dying has become an inseparable part of our hair grooming but while you are at it, you should also know the disadvantages or the ill-effects of hair dying. Since dying uses chemicals, it is bound to affect the health of your hair in the long run, it can cause severe allergic reactions with prolonged use. Though your hair dressers might advice frequent touch ups, it is advisable you keep them minimal.

Too much exposure to chemicals is not good for your hair and some of the dyes strip the hair shaft of its layers i.e. the cuticle and cortex, this is common with dyes that are meant for lightening your hair colour and contain bleach.

There are 2 types of hair dyes, permanent and semi-permanent. Semi permamnent hair dyes are better than permanent ones since they do not damage the roots, this is because the hair colour is washed out after 10 to 12 washes. The colour only forms a coat on the hair shaft it doesn’t penetrate inside the shaft.

Semi permanent dyes do not contain ammonia or peroxide which is used in permanent hair dye and thus they are milder. However you cannot go a shade lighter with this type of dye, you can only colour your hair a shade darker, it is ideal for covering grey hair.
