Coloring your hair enhances your looks and confidence to carry yourself. If you are thinking about dying your hair, check out these basic hair color tips from choosing the right hair color to do-it-yourself hair coloring techniques.
Hair coloring tips
Before coloring:
Wash your hair. A good kind of shampoo to use is one that removes the pollutants of your hair. Do not conditioning and do not use a shampoo/conditioner mixtures available in single bottle. Conditioner will interfere with the dye bonding to your hair.
If your scalp is soft and sensitive or your hair damaged or dry, wait about a day after washing to bleach or use permanent dye.
You can get really results with the new home-coloring products. They have become so easy to use that they’re practically fool proof, and ever so natural-looking.
Deep condition before you color
Wait two days after shampooing before coloring. The color will adhere better, since your scalp is more sensitive after shampooing, it will make the process more comfortable. Plus the natural oils in your hair will protect it.
Hair color at the hair ends fade more quickly as they are porous and do not hold color. Thus apply hair color that is one level darker to the ends, without adding the developer.
You can add small amount of gold or yellow accent to the hair color at the ends or certain sections of your hair to add warmth to them or add a highlighting effect.
If you go out in the sun or swim regularly, your hair color may wear off quickly. To avoid this, condition your hair regularly to negate the effects of summer heat and water.
Temporary Hair Coloring
Most temporary hair products come as hair rinses. Temporary colors do not penetrate, and thus will not produce a dramatic change in your color, but they will add highlights or intensify your own color. They wash out completely with one shampooing (that’s why they’re called temporary). Temporary coloring is usually made from acid dyes approved for food, drug and cosmetic use by the FDA, so no patch test is required. If, however, you choose a package that calls for a test, be sure to do it.
Chemistry Set
Never have two chemical processes—such as coloring, perming or relaxing hair—performed at the same time, according to Drs. Fran Cook-Bolden, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Columbia University in New York City, and Dr. Jeanine Downie, director of Image Dermatology in Montclair, New Jersey. Together, they have penned Beautiful Skin of Color: A Comprehensive Guide to Asian, Olive and Dark Skin (Regan Books, New York).
Permanent coloring will dye your hair so it will not wash out at all for a very long time. However this will leave your roots showing when they grow out which you need to be aware of and can really look bad later on.
Semi-permanent coloring will only darken your hair and cannot lighten it. It also lasts a variable length of time depending on the product. This is more suitable for a home color job but obviously has limitations. It can however be reversed easily unlike a permanent coloring!
Application procedure
Temporary dyes are the most flexible and best to use for hair coloring ideas as many individuals only need weekly application despite the fact that the dye fades after the first shampoo. Because they are temporary dyes, if the result of use does not look as was originally anticipated, the dye can be quickly washed out.
