Hair Care for Children
Hair care is of utmost importance among children for they are exposed to far more damaging external factors than adults. They play outdoors in mud, sand, dirt, water etc. Children usually are carefree and don’t really bother about taking care of themselves, it is for the parents to groom their children and to teach them basic hair and skin care.
Hair care should start as early as infancy, this is the time when extreme care is needed, one has to be very gentle while washing or oiling the infants hair. The best way to wash hair is in the reclining position, the way most of the professional salons do it. Since babies and children resist washing hair, this style of washing is perfect.
The shampoo will not run through the eyes and face, kids usually freak out when they feel suffocated due to the running water while washing hair. But when you wash their hair in the sink with a reclined position they will feel a lot more comfortable. Also during the early days of infancy, parents need to take extra care of the soft spot on the centre of the scalp. This area is very delicate and remains so until the age of 4 to 5 years, so be careful while washing and oiling. Do not exert pressure on this area.
As your child grows they start observing other people and their own parents. So if you want to imbibe good hair care habits, then you would have to set an example for the same. If you treat your hair harshly with blow dryers, irons, hair styling products etc, chances are your kid will also want to follow in your steps and will demand such things.
Try to keep your hair care routine to the basic like oiling, combing, brushing, washing or regular deep conditioning, your child will learn from you. Encourage your child to purchase their hair care products, this will lead to their involvement and they will learn to use the brush and combs. At times, it is advisable to let your child choose their own hairstyle. Don’t be too rigid when it comes to choosing a hairstyle but don’t let them go overboard. It should be manageable and acceptable in their school.
