Hair Care For Chemically Treated Hair

Chemically treated hair is often delicate, fragile and weak. It needs a lot of care and attention as compared to normal hair. Though aftercare is very important but it is good to make the right choices while putting your hair through the chemical torture. Hair care should begin before you take a chemical treatment. This way you will reduce the possible damage caused to your tresses.

Here, we give you a skinny about the various chemical treatments and what you can do to reduce the damage.

Highlighting – This is one of the most common type of chemical treatments. Highlighting is usually done in streaks so some hair is coloured while the rest of it is normal. Though your mane may look nourished, but the highlighted hair may appear dry. It is essential to treat coloured hair with extra care. Use deep conditioning treatments once in a week to nourish the hair. Also ensure that when you go for a root touch up, the colour does not overlap your existing coloured strands. This will damage the hair very badly.

Hair straightening - Never allow chemical application at the roots. Put your foot down and tell the hairdresser about your requirement. Straightening chemicals should not be applied at the roots. It can severely damage the hair. Do not agree for a root application, come what may. Be firm and tell them that you will accept responsibility for the results.

Perming – This is the ultimate torture for your hair. To reduce the harmful effects of perming, ask for an acid perm. This method does not require ammonia for opening the cuticles of your hair. Perming is a process that breaks the natural bonds of your hair and forms new bonds. Ammonia is required for breaking this bond, however, an acid perm uses heat to open cuticles and break the bonds. So the chemical damage is reduced.

The next time you visit a salon for any of these chemical treatments you will be aware about what happens with your hair. You can certainly reduce the damage, but do not hesitate to discuss these things openly with your hairdresser. They are not there to eat you up, in fact, when you take interest you will amazed to know how happy your stylist can be.
