Greasy Skin Problem

Greasy skin is only a problem after the onset of puberty, until then everyone has a childhood skin. Our skin needs a little bit of oil to remain supple, otherwise it will turn extremely dry and chapped.

The skin has an ability to produce this oil naturally, there are some glands situated underneath, they are known as sebaceous glands. They produce a thick, oily colourless secretion which is then released on the surface of the skin. This is a continuous process and is essential to maintain the elasticity of the skin. These sebaceous glands are few in numbers during childhood, however, they increase after puberty.

For instance there are around 100 glands per square meter and as we grow the glands too grow, they multiply to reach a level of 900 glands per square meter. No one can reverse this natural process, but you can certainly take some measures to keep the skin clean and clear. Oiliness attracts dirt and grime and may lead to bacterial infections and eruptions.

It often leads to pimples and acne, hence it is essential that you keep your skin clean. Remember that cleansing of the skin should not strip its natural oil balance. Our skin needs a balance of acid and alkaline, this is known as pH. It is essential that you do not disturb this balance. Hasrh soaps and even face wash can ruin the pH balance. Always look for a product that is pH balanced, it will make a lot of difference to your skin.

Follow a good skin care regime if you have an oily skin, for it will break out easily. Always wear your sunscreen before stepping out, use products meant specifically for oily skin. A simple recipe for nightly massage is 3 drops each of lemon, lavender and rosemary oil in 25 gms of water based gel. This will keep your skin soft and supple and make it more radiant.

There are 3 steps which should be followed for greasy skin, cleansing, toning and moisturising. A good toner for greasy skin would be to mix 5 drops each of petitgrain, lavender and geranium oil with 25 ml of vodka and 75 ml of orange flower water or rose water. Let it stand for upto a month and then filter. Apply twice daily.
