So, if you go for a matte colour then choose a creamy matte lipstick and apply some lip balm or gel before application. Dab the excess gel or balm, otherwise your colour wont stay longer. Do not rub the lipstick several times in an attempt to make it look darker, just one coat is sufficient. If you want a darker shade mix 2 shades of your choice to create a darker tone. 2) Lip Liner – Your lip liner plays a very important role. The common mistake people commit is that they use a darker coloured lip liner. Remember this rule, your lip liner should be of the exact shade of your lipstick. A darker shade will look like a ring around the mouth. Lip liner should not stand out from the lipstick, it is meant to contain feathering of the lipstick. That is the only job of a lip liner. It defines the lips, so that lipstick does not feather out into fine lines around the lips. However, many people wear a dark lip liner and spoil the whole look.
