Causes of Grey Hair

Grey hair is caused due to various factors but the most significant of them is genetic. The greying of our hair is genetically determined and is mostly hereditary hence there is not much you can do to prevent greying. Let us understand the process and causes of greying.

Process of graying – The hair bulb which is below the skin surface is the living part of the hair and works as a hair factory. When hair is made by the swift division of cells in the bulb it absorbs melanin which is produced by the pigments present in the hair follicles.

As we age the hair stops producing melanin and thus we lose the colour of our hair either completely or partially depending on the production of melanin. If the melanin production stops completely the hair will turn white and if it is produced is less quantity your hair will turn gray.

Causes of graying – Though scientifically it is our genes which are solely responsible for graying but there other factors also which contribute to graying of hair like; deficiency of iron, calcium and vitamin B 12. Also anemia, stress and tension can cause hair to grey. Premature greying is hereditary and your genes can be blamed for grey hair. Gray hair usually begins when the hair becomes dry and brittle.

This is a sign that gray hair is just around the corner, because when the hair is dry and brittle, it is not healthy. Hair loss can also be a sign of gray hair approaching. If you notice any of these signs, it can be considered as an alarm in fact you should look at treating it through home remedies. The best time to prevent greying is before it starts but 99 % of people ignore such signs and thus fall in the trap of grey hair.
