Care for Grey Hair

Greying is an inevitable process, every one has to pass through this stage of life. Some may grey early while others late. Though greying of hair is genetically determined in most of us, so if your father or grandfather had grey strands early in life you too are likely to grey early.

This is known as premature greying and can be corrected with some home treatments. To start with, include proteins, vitamins and minerals in your diet.

Proteins – Hair is supposed to be made up of protein so it is advisable to consume protein rich food like; sprouted whole grains, cereals,egg, meat and soy.

Vitamins – The Vitamins that are required for healthy hair are Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and the family of B Vitamins like B3, B5, B6 and B12. They are available in green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits like oranges, strawberries, pineapple and vegetables potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage. Also whole grains, fish and poultry products are good source of vitamins.

Minerals – Minerals like zinc, iron and copper are good for the hair. Pears are a good source of Vitamin C and Copper. Both of these nutrients can be thought of as antioxidant that helps protect cells in the body from oxygen related damage due to free radicals.

Grey hair also loses moisture so it is important to condition the hair since it becomes very dry. Some external application remedies can be adopted for grey hair.

1) Black pepper and curd – Mix approximately 1 gm of black pepper powder to a small bowl of curd (100 gms) and apply this paste once in a week and wash it off after half an hour, it will not only make your hair black but will also cure dandruff and act as a conditioner.

2) Boil tea leaves in water and strain it, add 2 teaspoons of salt and leave it for 1 hour, wash it with warm water. Follow this regime once in a fortnight to see visible difference in the hair colour.

3) Mix juice of bottle gourd in Olive oil and apply to hair, this will make your hair long, black, thick and shiny.
