Belting Out Good Looks
September 17, 2008
Today the focus of dressing up and looking good has transcended beyond just wearing the right clothes and make up. More attention is being paid to the right accessories that we see ourselves carrying. The bag, belt, shoes and earrings all contribute to making the right ensemble.
The belt can set off an outfit to a great extent. With a range available to complement every style and character, a belt can go from being a mere accessory to a fashion statement.
There are a variety of belts available today. Different fabrics, leather, and even materials like beads, shells and metallic finishes make a variety to choose from. A range of thicknesses starting from the broad hip belts to the snake-like thin belts worn low give you different looks you can sport. Combine this will the colours that are thrown in to match, and you are left almost reeling at the choices available before you.
While choosing the right belt keep in mind the occasion, outfit and your own body structure. Flowing dresses can be worn well with high, broad belts to give structure to the waist. Jeans and casual pants can be worn well with stylish, contemporary belts that help reflect your character. Try sticking to conservative leather for formal occasions, and use muted tones of brown and black.
Your own body type also determines the kind of belts you should wear. For those with a heavier structure, use thinner belts with more subtle colour that take attention away from the waist areas. For those with very thin waists it is a good idea to keep attention away from the waist area too. While they may experiment with either the narrow or medium width belts, broad belts should be avoided completely as they draw more attention, and also give a slightly narrower look to the waist.
The next time you go shopping, pause for a minute before reaching for the first belt you see. Don’t let this purchase buckle you down.
