Beauty Bathing

There is a common proverb that says ” When in Rome – bathe”. In the past generations there have been many beauty practices and amongst the ancient Romans their bathing ritual was one of the beauty regime.  There are many benefits of bathing.

Bathing not keeps the body clean but is also considered a way to unwind and de-stress yourself. Roman baths were large communal baths, open to the public. They would charge a fee for entering these bath complexes, a thin garment was given to both the sexes to change into and they were indulged in various stress-busting activities.

Exercise preceeded the bathing ritual, as they believed the perspiration would get them rid of their body impurities. Exercise was followed by massage, usually done with olive oil. The oil and dirt was then scraped off with a tool called strigil.

Massage was then followed with sauna but in the olden days, sauna was a warm pool known as the tepidarium. This place was just perfect to relax and indulge in some converstaion. The final step of this bathing ritual ended with a cold pool, known as frigidarium.

Frigidarium was known to refresh the body and cool it. The elaborate bathing ritual was a real stress buster, it was a place for socialising. The concept of bath has changed completely over the years.

It has merely taken the place of hygiene and people no more indulge in such lengthy baths. With the urban life which is running at jet speed, there is hardly any time for personal grooming let alone such elaborate baths.

The concept has died but is making a come back in a more modern version in the form of Spa’s. Though there is personal care and privacy in spa’s but the procedure is almost similar. So indulge in some “me” time and take an appointment at a Spa to rejunevate and invigorate your senses.
