Ayurveda For Hair

Ayurveda is derived from the sanskrit word, Ayu, which means Life and Veda, which means Knowledge. Thus Ayurveda is the science of life, it believes in holistic treatment and has flexible treatment methods to suit individual needs. Ayurveda works on the concept of three Dosha’s or Prakriti’s of human body, all the three dosha’s should be in equal balance. Any imbalance in the dosha’s would lead to health problems. The three types of dosha’s are Vatte, Pitta and Kapha and they are known as Tridosha’s.

Ayurveda also incorporates the use of herbs to cure certain conditions but its method of curing mainly revolves around your lifestyle, eating habits and the phyiscal/ mental balance. There are many ayurvedic herbs which can cure various common and severe diseases. We shall look at few of these herbs.

Brahmi - This herb is known to be beneficial for hair and scalp. Brahmi is known as Thyme leafed gratiola and is found in wet places in India. It is known to relax your mind when applied on the scalp and has cooling effect. It also enhances memory and reduces anxiety. It is usually mixed with a hair oil for massage.

Amla - Amla is known as Indian Gooseberry, this tiny fruit is packed with Vitamins. This power packed fruit not only contains Vitamin C but also has anti-oxidant properties. It is extremely beneficial in skin and hair care. When applied on skin it fights ageing and when used on hair it promotes hair growth. Its a ayurvedic cure for dandruff and hair problems.

Tulasi - This herb is known as the Holy Basil, it is cultivated extensively in the tropical climate in India. Tulasi can be found in every Hindu home because it is known to ward off evil and negative energies. It has many medicinal uses, it is used to cure skin and hair conditions. The juice of tulasi applied directly on the scalp reduces dandruff.
